Sindh University: The First Higher Education Institution of Sindh
The Sindh university, commonly known as University of Jamshoro, is one of the oldest and most prestigious educational institutions in Pakistan. It was constituted under the University of Sindh Act No. XVII of 1947, passed by the Legislative Assembly of Sindh. Over the years, the Act was revised and modified, with the Act of 1972 providing the university with greater autonomy and representation of teachers.
Founding of Sindh University
The Sindh University Jamshoro was established in 1947 and initially functioned as an examining body for higher education. It was relocated to Hyderabad in 1951, where it transformed into a full-fledged teaching university, marking the beginning of its academic journey. The first teaching department, the Department of Education, was founded to address the shortage of trained teachers in the country. By the mid-1950s, additional departments in science and humanities were introduced, expanding the university’s academic reach.
Role of G. M. Syed
One of the most influential figures in the establishment of Sindh University was Sain G M, a prominent educationist and Sindhi Syed politician and founder of Nationalism in Sind. He played a vital role in advocating for a higher education institution dedicated to Sind. Syed was a strong proponent of Sindhi language, culture, and education, and his efforts in mobilizing resources and government support were crucial in laying the foundation of the university for Sindhis.
Expansion to Jamshoro
The university continued to grow, and in the late 1950s, development work began on a new campus at Jamshoro, located about 16 kilometers from Hyderabad, on the right bank of the Indus River. This campus was later named Allama I.I. Kazi Campus in honor of the renowned scholar and educator. In 1961, most of the science departments were moved to Jamshoro, followed by the arts and humanities departments in 1970.
Today, the Jamshoro University has 43 teaching institutes, centers, and departments under various academic faculties. Recent additions include the Institute of Biotechnology & Genetic Engineering and the Centre for Environmental Sciences.
Academic Programs and Affiliated Institutions
The Sindh university Hyderabad offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs. Its faculties provide Bachelor (Honours), Master’s, M.Phil., and Ph.D. degrees in diverse disciplines, including Natural Sciences, Social Sciences, Arts, Education, Islamic Studies, Commerce, and Business Administration. The university also oversees four law colleges and 74 degree and postgraduate colleges, including 16 private colleges affiliated with it.
Each faculty operates under a Dean, appointed by the Chancellor for a three-year term. The university also runs evening programs, including Master’s degrees in English, E-commerce, and Multimedia Technology. Additionally, postgraduate diploma and certificate courses are offered in various disciplines.
