Early Life and Education
Born on 21 February 1953 in Larkana, Sindh, Azra Fazal Pechuho belongs to a politically influential family. She is the daughter of Hakim Ali Zardari and Bilquis Sultana, and the sister of Asif Ali Zardari, 2nd time President of Pakistan, as well as Fauzia Abbasi and Faryal Talpur, both of whom are active in politics.
Azra Pechuho pursued medicine and earned an MBBS degree from Dow Medical College, Karachi, establishing herself as a professional physician before stepping into politics. She is married to Dr. Fazlullah, and they have a son, Muhammad Pechuho.
Political Career
Member of the National Assembly (2002–2018)
Dr Azra Fazal Pechuho first entered parliamentary politics in the 2002 general elections, securing a seat in the National Assembly from NA-213 (Nawabshah-I) as a PPP candidate. She won by defeating Syed Zahid Hussain Shah of Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) with 75,237 votes.
Although she was not a prominent political figure initially, her role gained significance after the assassination of Benazir Bhutto in 2007. Following the tragic event, she took on the chancellorship of Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Institute of Science and Technology, highlighting her commitment to education and public service.
She was re-elected to the National Assembly from the same constituency in the 2008 general elections, securing 108,404 votes and defeating Syed Zahid Hussain Shah of Pakistan Muslim League-Functional (PML-F). Her third consecutive victory came in the 2013 general elections, where she received 113,199 votes, defeating Inayat Ali Rind of Muttahida Qaumi Movement.
Transition to Provincial Politics (2018–Present)
In 2018, Pechuho shifted her political focus to provincial politics. She contested and won a seat in the Provincial Assembly of Sindh from PS-37 (Shaheed Benazirabad-I) as a PPP candidate. Following her victory, she was appointed Provincial Minister of Sindh for Health and Population Welfare in Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah’s cabinet on 19 August 2018.
During her tenure, she worked on improving Sindh’s healthcare infrastructure, handling public health crises, and promoting maternal and child health initiatives. Her tenure as Health Minister ended in August 2023, but she was reappointed to the same position in March 2024.
Return to the Sindh Assembly (2024)
In February 2024, Pechuho was re-elected as a Member of the Provincial Assembly of Sindh, reaffirming her influence in the region’s politics.
